How to flip / reverse a column of data order vertically in Excel?

Flip a column of data order in Excel with Sort command

Using Sort command can help you flip a column of data in Excel with following steps:

1. Insert a series of sequence numbers besides the column. In this case, in insert 1, 2, 3…, 7 in Column B, then select B2:B12, see screenshot:

2. Click the Data > Sort Z to A, see screenshot:

3. In the Sort Warning dialog box, check the Expand the selection option, and click the Sort button.

4. Then you will see the number order of Column A is flipped. And you can delete or hide the Column B according to your needs. See the following screenshot:

This method is also applied to reversing multiple columns of data order.

Flip a column of data order in Excel with VBA

If you know how to use a VBA code in Excel, you may flip / reverse data order vertically as follows:

1. Hold down the Alt + F11 keys in Excel, and it opens the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications window.

2. Click Insert > Module, and paste the following macro in the Module Window.

Reverse axis order in chart

There is an option in Format Axis dialog for reversing the axis order.

1. Right click the y axis you want to reverse, and select Format Axis from the context menu. See screenshot:

2. In Format Axis dialog, check Categories in reverse order option in Axis Options section. See screenshot:

Tip: In bar chart, reserve the x axis with righting click the x axis and selecting the Format Axis from context menu, then checking the Values in reverse order in the Format Axis dialog box.

  When you reverse the order of the y axis, how do you keep the x axis labels at the bottom of the chart? And, why do they move to the top of the chart?

    Click 'categories in reverse order' to fix the order problem, then click 'value (Y) axis crosses at maximum category' to put the axis at the bottom.
    These two together will make horizontal bar charts work the way any normal human would want.. :-)

  This is good; however, I still need the x-axis lables to remain at the bottom fo the chart. When you reverse the order, they move to the top. Who would want the axis labels at the top of the chart????
