This HDMI to VGA is an active cable. The distinction between active and passive adapters determines whether or not that adapter will work for your needs. If you try to set up an HDMI cable to a VGA monitor using passive adapters (an adapter with no chipset in it), or using multiple adapters, like adding an HDMI to DVI adapter on top of a DVI to VGA adapter to achieve the HDMI to VGA conversion, you most likely won’t have success with this configuration. This is due to HDMI being a digital signal, whereas VGA is an analog signal. Our Plugable HDMI to VGA active adapter cable is built with an internal CH7101A Chipset, allowing you to connect your HDMI laptop to a VGA projector or monitor. Please note that VGA is not capable of carrying an audio signal, and the adapter cable will not transmit audio.

Is there a suggested order for which end of the cable should be connected first?

For best results, plug in the VGA end of the cable to your display prior to plugging in the HDMI end to your output device.

Does the cable allow for both HDMI to VGA and VGA to HDMI?

No, the Plugable active HDMI to VGA cable is a one-way street only. It connects in one direction, from a HDMI output to a VGA input.

After plugging in the adapter cable, I’m no longer hearing audio playback through my system. Why is this, and how do I fix it?

Sometimes Windows will switch the playback device to the HDMI port when it detects an HDMI cable connected, even if that cable isn’t able to transmit sound. There’s a Windows setting that can be changed so that audio will continue to play through your computer speakers. The settings change should only need to be made once.

With the HDMI-VGA cable plugged in to the system, we’ll change the preferred playback device setting to tell Windows to use the computer speakers rather than trying to output over HDMI. This page has a good quick guide to where the setting is found (the process should be virtually the same for Windows 7, 8.1 and 10).

Does the HDMI to VGA cable support HDCP?

No, the Plugable active HDMI to VGA cable does not support HDCP content.

The cable does not work with my HDMI device.

The Plugable active HDMI to VGA cable requires a powered HDMI port, unfortunately the HDMI powered port standards are not widely complied with, so it is device-dependent whether the HDMI to VGA cable will work properly.

Today's video technology is moving away from analog (VGA) for a digital connection format (HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort). However, there are still situations where you may need to change the display technologies, usually due to differing ports on a computer and display. Video signals may be adapted in either direction (HDMI to VGA or VGA to HDMI), but there are certain limitations and expense differences.

VGA to HDMI

In some situations, it may be necessary to send a VGA signal from a computer to an HDMI connection on a newer display, TV, or projector. Using a VGA to HDMI Scaler/Converter, like the one shown in the picture above, allows you to connect your computer to any device requiring an HDMI connection.

As can be seen in the picture above, this converter also includes a USB cable for the computer audio. Some converters may have an audio cable, as well as a USB cable, for power.

If your computer only has a VGA connection and you have a desktop computer, you may also consider upgrading the video card in the computer.

HDMI to VGA

An HDMI to VGA converter may be a cheaper cable that can connect an HDMI signal from a computer to a VGA connection on an older display. Because VGA is an older technology, this option should be avoided unless there is no other alternative.

An HDMI cable can send an audio and video signal over the same cable. However, a VGA cable can only accept a video signal. To get audio and video, purchase a converter with a VGA connector and an audio cable or USB with audio capability.

Signal quality considerations

Whenever you convert one signal to another, the signal of lesser quality always determines the final output quality. For example, VGA is an analog signal (subject to interference and signal loss in transit), whereas HDMI is digital (higher fidelity, no signal loss). As such, the VGA signal will be the limiting factor of the final output signal.

In other words, converting VGA to HDMI will not improve the signal quality of the original output. Similarly, Converting HDMI to VGA will possibly entail a small loss of signal quality.
