Cannot Start The Source Application For This Object Excel Mac

Morning, i have a user that is trying to open an embedded pdf file within an excel file. When he tries it returns this error: Cannot start the source application for this object. He can open the embedded excel and word files okay, it's just the pdf. He has adobe reader 6 and is using windows xp, office xp. 'cannot start the source application for this object. There may not be enough memory available.' In trying to open an excel for mac 2011 file with PDFs in it, get the above message. In Excel 2008, it didnt allow for the macros to run, now it asks to enable them, but the cursor simply moves the object around.

Hi there,

Our company regularly receives word docs with other MS files embedded in the documents (.pdf, .xls and .doc). I am able to open both the Word and Excel files without too many problems; however, the .pdfs will not open - I have tried compressing file and then unzipping using command window, but this is not creating a folder.

Any suggestions appreciated - seems might odd that Apple haven't fixed this yet as I note this issue has been around for a while?!

Thanks!

Word is a Microsoft product. You might try asking in the Microsoft Help Communities

Why is it odd that Apple has not fixed a problem you perceive to exist in Microsoft Word?

While attempting to insert a PDF file into an Excel file while using Excel 2010 (Insert tab, Object, Adobe Acrobat Document), one of my users was receiving the error: 'Cannot start the source application for this object'. In my scenario, we are running Office 2010 Standard & Adobe Reader X. From reports I have read, the same thing may happen with Excel 2007. Here is how to fix:
- Close Excel
- Open Adobe Reader X
- From the 'Edit' menu, select 'Preferences'
- Select 'General' on left
- Uncheck 'Enable Protected Mode at Startup'
You should now be able to insert PDF documents properly!

Thanks Kublai99!

StartWhat is Protected Mode?
Protected Mode is a new security feature for Adobe Reader X that protects users' applications and data by limiting what malicious files can do and access. Protected Mode is enabled by default and Adobe recommends that you leave it on for security reasons.
